Occupy Oakland's Weekend Of Action...Oakland Police/Mayor Jean Quans Response Violence... Occupy Mondays

OCCUPY OAKLAND...

Weekend Of Action
As I've mentioned in the past FOTM  does not attempt to speak For OWS in any way. We are not affiliated as an organisation although I, myself, am a member of the 99%.  This is also not an attempt too lecture Occupy Oakland.  After all I was not there. I didn't see what happened. The only information that came too my attention was through various News organizations.

OPD and Teargas
Looks like things got a little out of hand. As usual the OPD's response was over the top.  actually provoking protesters, to move towards defending themselves

FROM ABC NEWS...

"...For weeks the protests had waned, with only a smattering of people taking to Oakland's streets for occasional weekend marches that bore little resemblance to the headline-grabbing Occupy demonstrations of last fall. Then came Saturday, which started peacefully enough — a midday rally at City Hall and a march. But hours later, the scene near downtown Oakland had dramatically deteriorated: clashes punctuated by rock and bottle throwing by protesters and volleys of tear gas from police, and a City Hall break-in that left glass cases smashed, graffiti spray-painted on walls and an American flag burned. More than 400 people were arrested on charges ranging from failure to disperse to vandalism, police spokesman Sgt. Jeff Thomason said. At least three officers and one protester were injured..." abc news via AP

However, everything I viewed didn't have a very positive spin too it.  Not too say the OPD weren't up too there notorious, behaving badly, reputation. Going as far as too arresting journalist.

FROM THE MOTHER JONES ...

Glen Halog via Flickr
"..On Saturday, Occupy Oakland re-entered the national spotlight during a day-long effort to take over an empty building and transform it into a social center. Oakland police thwarted the efforts, arresting more than 400 people in the process, primarily during a mass nighttime arrest outside a downtown YMCA. That number included at least six journalists, myself included, in direct violation of OPD media relations policy that states "media shall never be targeted for dispersal or enforcement action because of their status."..." read more at MotherJones.com

OPD'S STATEMENT...

OPD Teargas and American Citizens
"..."The Oakland Police Department ("OPD") is ... prepared to deter criminal activity or respond to illegal actions, including vandalism, arson, acts of violence, trespassing, and interference with officers performing their duties. Such activities disrupt otherwise peaceful and lawful gatherings and will not be tolerated."..." via dailykos

THIS IS...

OPD attacks Occupy Oakland
the side I don't think we want too be portrayed as.  The 99% is not a violent protest movement.  Only in Oakland have we seen protesters and the media attacked and placed under arrest at psychotic pace.  Mayor Jean Quan and the OPD feel the need too either stifle the movement or make a name for themselves. The violence they continue to engage in unrestrained is evidence of intolerance of peaceful protest.  Perhaps the DOJ need step in.

more too come
