Weekend Of Action

As I've mentioned in the past FOTM does not attempt to speak For OWS in any way. We are not affiliated as an organisation although I, myself, am a member of the 99%. Common Cause launches Amend 2012 campaign.

Two years after the Supreme Court turned unlimited corporate money loose on our elections in the reckless Citizens United decision, Common Cause has launched a national effort to help voters strike back.

The anniversary will mark the start of a 50 state drive to give voters a voice to push back on cooperate political spending and build toward a national referendum calling on Congress to pass a constitutional amendment to reverse Citizens United.

Amend 2012 provides a creative and ambitious addition to the constitutional amendment movement by giving voters a direct opportunity to make their voices heard now, during the 2012 elections, on the need to overturn Citizens United. The campaign aims to give voters the tools to put "voter instruction" measures on the November ballot in as many states as possible, either by voter initiative or action by state legislators. The measure would instruct Congress to adopt a constitutional amendment to make it clear that corporations are not people and authorize campaign spending limits.

A Realistic Look at the Question of Progress in the Area of Race Relations

"...There are three basic attitudes that one can take toward the question of progress in the area of race relations. And the first attitude that can be taken is that of extreme optimism. Now the extreme optimist would argue that we have come a long, long way in the area of race relations. He would point proudly to the marvelous strides that have been made in the area of civil rights over the last few decades. From this he would conclude that the problem is just about solved, and that we can sit comfortably by the wayside and wait on the coming of the inevitable.

The second attitude that one can take toward the question of progress in the area of race relations is that of extreme pessimism. The extreme pessimist would argue that we have made only minor strides in the area of race relations. He would argue that the rhythmic beat of the deep rumblings of discontent that we hear from the Southland today is indicative of the fact that we have created more problems than we have solved. He would say that we are retrogressing instead of progressing. He might even turn to the realms of an orthodox theology and argue that hovering over every man is the tragic taint of original sin and that at bottom human nature can not be changed. He might even turn to the realms of modern psychology and seek to show the determinative effects of habit structures and the inflexibility of certain attitudes that once become molded in one's being. From all of this he would conclude that there can be no progress in the area of race relations.

Now you will notice that the extreme optimist and the extreme pessimist have at least one thing in common: they both agree that we must sit down and do nothing in the area of race relations. The extreme optimist says do nothing because integration is inevitable. The extreme pessimist says do nothing because integration is impossible. But there is a third position that is another attitude that can be taken, and it is what I would like to call the realistic position. The realist in the area of race relations seeks to reconcile the truths of two opposites while avoiding the extremes of both. So the realist would agree with the optimist that we have come a long, long way. But, he would go on to balance that by agreeing with the pessimist that we have a long, long way to go. by the percentage of registered Independents who voted in the Republican primary last night. Maybe I should say, "not really". So many Republican voters in New Hampshire are registered as Independent. Kind of makes me wonder if whether registered Independents are nothing more than Republican Lyte. I've been thinking along these lines since the 2010 "tea party" slaughter at the polls.

I find this both interesting and very telling. Republicans have become so unsavory as a political party, that on paper many refuse to associate themselves with the GOP . Occupy Mondays... My Brief Encounter w/Iraq War Vet And Occupy Oakland Hero Scott Olson

preface this with a statement. When I met Scott Olson it was informal and in fact just happened to be a chance encounter. He just happened to sit next too me Christmas day on MUNI. This was in no way an official interview I was granted. We just happened to be having a friendly chat. My recollection of my conversation with him may be extremely flawed. Therefore I don't "quote" Mr. Olson. I'll say this again, it was an awesome privilege to meet him. In my opinion he is a HERO to the OWS movement.

and quite amazing happened to me on Christmas day. I was traveling across town on the SF MUNI. I was doing the holiday family visit thing and Iraq war veteran Scott Olson. Sat down next to me. At first I didn't think it was him. Then I took another look and I asked him if that's who he was. He smiled and said yes. I told him what a privilege it was too meet him. The last time I saw him, he was on Countdown w/Keith Olbermann on CURRENT TV .

I asked him "how he was doing" and "Thanked" him for his "service in the Iraq War". We joked about the fact that he hadn't been injured during his two tours in the Iraq occupation. Yet, when he comes home, while peacefully protesting, he was injured in the OPD riot at Occupy Oakland.

I asked him how he was coming along in his recovery, He said he was currently disabled and not able to return to work. I commented about his speech and asked him how he was coming along he said he still had a ways to go before his speech was fully recovered. I asked him if the Veterans Administration had been taking care of his needs and he told me they weren't doing such a good job. That he hadn't begun to receive benefits from them. That he was being helped by the Iraqi Veterans For Peace.

I was really surprised that the VA isn't doing such a good job of taking care of vets. After all these guys put there life at risk keeping America safe.

Although we only chatted briefly I felt really privileged to be speaking with this HERO of the OWS movement and former soldier for America.

If you've read this blog long enough you understand quite clearly that I believe the most notorious and out right shameless LIARS in politics today and probably yesteryear are the Republican "LIE about everything", say anything, do nothing, deceive all, regardless of the cost GOP party. it is only reasonable to consider the poor, the unemployed, the middle-class and their families with humility and FEAR. We are not a religious Nation. I get that. Yet, we ought to be upstanding and respectful.

THE POSSIBLE VIOLATION OF CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS AND THE INSULT OF REQUIRED DRUG TESTING OF THEY UNEMPLOYED FOR BENEFITS THEY PAID INTO...

Republican Governors and the GOP Congress stand to be criticized for their cruelty of those that of no fault of their own are long term unemployed or under employed. Also of those who are disabled due to accidents and disease, family circumstances, brought up by drug addicted and abusive parents, people that are underprivileged, raised in poverty, lack of education, youth pregnancy, and mental illness.

In Florida where Republican Governor Rick Scott and the Republican legislature have passed drug testing laws for Welfare recipients over 7000 were tested and less than 10 tested positive. Each person tested were charged $45.00 to take the test and would be reimbursed if they passed the test.

Not only is this wrong and humiliating it is also, in my opinion, a violation of due process as well as it may violate the Constitution's ban on unreasonable searches and seizures.

Even people who through their own fault based on addiction disease and some type of mental illness were respected and, considered kindly, for their circumstance. they would never allow a tax-increase on the "proverbial" job creators. Yet they voted, and attempted to cover it up so it wouldn't look like they voted, to kill the payroll tax-cut.

That's a tax increase.

I suppose the only taxes the GOP are concerned about not raising are on the wealthiest 1% and Corporations. Not the middle-class. To be honest, when the GOP speak of "raising taxes", they are only being deceptive. They use this language whenever America is asking, "why not raise taxes on the 1%"?

And again, when they are speaking of the Bush tax-cuts for the wealthy sun setting in 2012. Taxes are at their lowest in 25 years. Revenue is an issue. The adult conversation ought to include tax increases on the 1%. It's simply time they pay their fare share.

FRIDAY AS...I was reading post on the OWS website I ran across an interesting action that the movement had entered into. There was a call for a Solidarity Hunger Strike.

"... join the OWS Hunger Strikers for a national 24-hour fast to protest the violent evictions across the country that have robbed the Occupy Movement of our right to free speech and assembly. Thursday will be the thirteenth day of the hunger strike for space."For us, space is not a mere necessity- a place to lay our head, to eat our meals, to congregate and assemble- it is also a symbol and a direct action," said Diego Ibanez, one of the hunger strikers.
